Agilent Technologies’ Electronic Lab Notebook Adopted by Institute for Medical Immunology

Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced that the Institute for Medical Immunology (IMI), part of Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), has chosen the Agilent ELN electronic lab notebook to manage its scientific data. Located on the BIOPARK Charleroi Brussels South, the IMI is part of the Faculty of Medicine of the ULB. Work focuses on translating discoveries “from bench to bedside” based on multidisciplinary teams of medical doctors and basic scientists. Projects are organized along four research programs addressing key questions in medical immunology: vaccine adjuvants, the immune system in early life, transplantation medicine, and immune biomarkers. Through its participation in several research networks, it is expected to contribute to the development of Wallonia in the context of the European Research Area. "The IMI subjected competitive systems to rigorous evaluation, and we’re very delighted that their scientists doing the testing unanimously selected the Agilent ELN,” said ...  >>>

LabAutomation2010, the world's largest conference and exhibition focused exclusively on the rapidly growing field of laboratory automation, brings together a diverse group of academicians, scientists, engineers, business leaders, post-docs and graduate students from around the globe. For details, visit http://labautomation.org.

Electronic Laboratory Notebooks will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel - St James in London, UK from January 27-28. SMi's 3rd Annual Electronic Laboratory Notebooks conference provides delegates with essential information relating to previous experiences of the implementation and use of ELN software. Avoid common pitfalls and stumbling blocks by learning from the mistakes of your peers through detailed case studies. Data management will also be addressed, along with the legal framework for such systems. For details, visit http://www.smi-online.co.uk/events/overview.asp?is=4&ref=3179.

Adopting R&D Informatics Systems Data Management, Integration, & Knowledge Management
will be held at the Moscone North Convention Center in San Francisco, CA from February 3-5. This conference is part of the Informatics Channel that will take place at CHI's 17th International Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference and will bring together a unique mix of delegates from both Pharmaceutical and Biotech IT, research informatics groups and those involved with knowledge management, translational informatics and computational approaches to drug discovery. Everyone together in one location with one purpose: to further the adoption of integrated R&D informatics systems and accelerate drug discovery. A recent trend toward the use of open source and public platforms to drive drug discovery will be featured extensively throughout the program and include talks from Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Gilead. Several presentations will touch upon recent strategies with cloud, wikis, ontologies, open data standards and the semantic web. For details, visit http://www.tri-conference.com.

2009: The Year in Review
A Look Back at 2009 Shows Dynamic, Far-Reaching Changes in LIMS Industry

There is a group of friends who end each year by writing down all the negative things that happened on scraps of paper and tossing those scraps into the fire, enabling them to start the new year fresh and unencumbered.

Looking back at 2009, there are certainly things to throw into the fire: an evil economy, loss of jobs, loss of sales.  Fortunately the LIMS industry was not hit as hard as other sectors.  Of course there was streamlining--from internal reorganizations to mergers and acquisition--but companies continued to install new LIMS, new LIMS were introduced, and a plethora of enhancements and add-ons for existing LIMS were offered.  Many Informatics vendors reported strong sales and growth during the year.

Certainly 2010 holds the promise for a brighter future: the economy should rise out of the doldrums and companies should continue to invest in software that can enhance laboratory productivity and data management.  A close eye will continue to be kept on operating costs, hence the market for the new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) LIMS should grow.  The Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) market should also grow as companies upgrade their systems to realize the benefits of this technology for the lab.

The annual Pittsburgh Conference (PittCon) in March 2009 heralded the release of many new products and solutions, as it should since it is the big analytical industry gathering, and remains the only conference where the majority of LIMS and Informatics vendors gather.  However new products were announced throughout the year, indicating continued efforts on the part of the vendors to improve their product offerings as well as continued capability to do so.

From the top of the year when LabAnswer acquired Laboratory Automation Solutions in January to July when the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity picked up steam with the announcements that LabVantage would acquire Life Technologies’ SQL*LIMS business and that IDBS would acquire InforSense to the startling news in December that Abbott would acquire STARLIMS, 2009 definitely saw increased M&A activity.  Perhaps the Abbott acquisition was foreshadowed by the increased energy by Microsoft and other such vendors to make inroads into the Analytical field.

Now would be a good time to write down not only resolutions for the new year, but a resolve to release the problems of the past year, consigning them to the fire.  Following is a summary of the brightest news from 2009, with the LIMSletter’s annual Top Ten lists of LIMS and Informatics news.
